A Getaway to Perth

With limited resources but flexible time, we've tried to keep an eye out for specials online, trying to snag cheap accommodation. It hasn't worked so well, but last week we found a very reasonable hotel which offered a big room, a four-course dinner and scottish breakfast for a low, low rate. But in Perth. Perth? Like Australia? We hadn't heard of the town, but as it turned out, the town was beautiful and a wonderful place to do some r+r. Aside from a very adequate range of restaurants and shops, Perth boasted some impressive castles and hiking trails near the River Tay, the largest river in Scotland. Below are some of the highlights of the excursion.

Alright movie buffs: What movie is Christina parodying in the last picture? The prize involves immortal fame on our blog, and maybe something Scottish if we remember to bring it home in August.

Z looks like quite the jaded traveler...but a very cute jaded traveler.

I can't even take a stab at the movie question.

You changed your options below, so I can leave a comment! Yahoo! (You may regret this change!)
If Micah's right, that's no fair. Employees of Sally Forth! and their families are ineligible to receive prizes. I have no idea what the movie is, but I want something Scottish. How about a nice pipe band? :)
The pictures are beautiful. Jealousy abounds.;) So glad you are getting chances to see parts of the country, even if they are parts you've never heard of before!
Last week, I watched a Scottish movie called "Dear Frankie." Have you seen it? It was very well done as well as having a good story. It takes place in Glasgow.

Hi Anne!
Yes, we changed the options with you in mind, so I'm so glad it works!
Don't worry, Micah's no where near right. But actually, I think I may have seen this particular movie for the first time with you. I know it was at Geneva with a bunch of people.

You got me on the movie, too. I have no idea.

That's a great picture of Z--he definitely looks jaded, as your mom said--and the scenery is gorgeous. I'm glad the trip went so well.

We just watched a great movie that is set in Scotland: The Water Horse.

The Hitchcocks said...

No, it is not Braveheart. I'll give everyone a hint. It has to do with the name of the river.

The Tay Bridge Disaster-by william mcgonagall

Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

'Twas about seven o'clock at night,
And the wind it blew with all its might,
And the rain came pouring down,
And the dark clouds seem'd to frown,
And the Demon of the air seem'd to say-
"I'll blow down the Bridge of Tay."

When the train left Edinburgh
The passengers' hearts were light and felt no sorrow,
But Boreas blew a terrific gale,
Which made their hearts for to quail,
And many of the passengers with fear did say-
"I hope God will send us safe across the Bridge of Tay."

But when the train came near to Wormit Bay,
Boreas he did loud and angry bray,
And shook the central girders of the Bridge of Tay
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

So the train sped on with all its might,
And Bonnie Dundee soon hove in sight,
And the passengers' hearts felt light,
Thinking they would enjoy themselves on the New Year,
With their friends at home they lov'd most dear,
And wish them all a happy New Year.

So the train mov'd slowly along the Bridge of Tay,
Until it was about midway,
Then the central girders with a crash gave way,
And down went the train and passengers into the Tay!
The Storm Fiend did loudly bray,
Because ninety lives had been taken away,
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

As soon as the catastrophe came to be known
The alarm from mouth to mouth was blown,
And the cry rang out all o'er the town,
Good Heavens! the Tay Bridge is blown down,
And a passenger train from Edinburgh,
Which fill'd all the peoples hearts with sorrow,
And made them for to turn pale,
Because none of the passengers were sav'd to tell the tale
How the disaster happen'd on the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

It must have been an awful sight,
To witness in the dusky moonlight,
While the Storm Fiend did laugh, and angry did bray,
Along the Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
Oh! ill-fated Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
I must now conclude my lay
By telling the world fearlessly without the least dismay,
That your central girders would not have given way,
At least many sensible men do say,
Had they been supported on each side with buttresses,
At least many sensible men confesses,
For the stronger we our houses do build,
The less chance we have of being killed.

i give up, have no idea and wont guess anymore.......

Did you write that poem, Micah? Nice. I've got one in the works, coming your way shortly.

Christina

micah said...

hehe....no, the mcgonnagal guy did.....i was trying to search the web for movies using the name of the river and found rob roy was filmed in perth in the river tay......

and also found a movie about the tay and mcgonagil, who was a poet and wrote that poem about the river tay, i guess they had a tragic incident when the bridge collapsed 100 years ago....and there was a movie in 1974.

so i was insinuating you were on the collapsing bridge on the river tay 100 years ago,....but i know it isnt the movie your thinking of.

The movie I remember seeing with you is Legends of the Fall, and discussing it in the foyer of McKee Hall late at night, but...I don't know what that has to do with your picture. Maybe it's A River Runs Through It? Is there a deadline on this? It's driving me crazy. :)

The Hitchcocks said...

Hi Anne,
Yep, I remember that too. Fun times. But no, that's not it.

OK, last big hint. The line from the movie that I'm acting out in the picture is: "Tay in the win'!"

If no one gets it, we'll tell.

So are you guys going to be there in September or are you coming back permanently in August? My friend and student at Baylor is studying abroad there next fall and I thought it would be fun for her to meet you if you are still going to be there. By the way, Z keeps getting cuter and cuter!

The Hitchcocks said...

Hi Carrie!
We're coming back to Sioux Falls in August. Nathan will come back a couple of times a year to meet with his advisor, but we won't be living here anymore after August.
